Last August, the American Chemical Society Publication arm, one of the world’s largest scientific organisations, released an virtual special issue (VSI) on “Advances in Mechanochemistry” to celebrate the 10th International Conference on Mechanochemistry and Mechanical Alloying 2020 (INCOME 2020), which was postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic to June 2022 and is co-organised by the COST Action Mechanochemistry for Sustainable Industry
Despite the challenges originated by the pandemic, researchers across the world showcase their latest research in the field of mechanochemistry through a series of cutting-edge articles in a wide range of fields of chemistry and chemical engineering. The results presented provide a comprehensive view of the vibrant field of mechanochemistry and underscore mechanochemistry’s transformative potential to help realise the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and the European Green Deal objectives.
This VSI and much of the research presented was facilitated by the support of the EU Programme COST Action Mechanochemistry for Sustainable Industry (MechSustInd). The Action focuses on the development of the field of mechanochemistry and mechanochemical techniques within the context of chemical, pharmaceutical industries, and process engineering.

“The VSI was an excellent opportunity to raise awareness on mechanochemistry and its diverse applications and to highlight the richness of a continuously growing field of research. The research displayed opens new opportunities for clean and sustainable processes in chemistry and beyond. This issue has come to light due to the contribution of a dedicated and global community of scientists in the field of mechanochemistry and has been catalysed by the networking opportunities offered by the COST Programme”
Launched in February 2019, the network gathers European and world scientists from 33 countries representing more than 80 academic and institutions in Europe and across the world (including China, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, USA) to explore the unexpressed potential shown by Mechanochemistry. The Action aims to nucleate a critical mass of actors from the EU research Institutions, enterprises, and industries, bringing together different areas of expertise and application. The creation of an authoritative community to promote the study of mechanochemistry and encourage its utilisation in production processes will catalyse strategic advances in the European chemical industry.
