Proceedings of the Fourth Annual Workshop of COST Action 855, which took place at the Moredun Research Institute in Edinburgh, Midlotian, Scotland on September 3-5, 2006.

The main objective of COST 718 is to improve the meteorological applications to agriculture. To do this, it deals with three main topics: the availability of meteorological data from standard network, remote sensing and Numerical Weather Models, the application of models in the field of crop diseases, irrigation and climate change, and the diffusion to the farmers of the information through new technologies.

For centuries, scientists have been fascinated by the role of the Sun in the Earth’s climate system. Recent discoveries, outlined in this book, have gradually unveiled a complex picture, in which our variable Sun affects the climate variability via a number of subtle pathways, the implications of which are only now becoming clear. 

This publication reveals the current proceedings of the conference ‘Wood quality and Niche products’ which is in line with a series of workshops and conferences within the COST action E40. The various presentations reveal a huge variety of possible niche products and special applications beginning with specific fibre morphology of large diameter timber (LDT), solid wood applications but also marketing issues and challenges. The proceedings are rounded up by a survey on the forest wood chain and LDT aspects in the Ukraine.

The main objective of the Action was to develop scenarios describing the future use of recovered paper within the European paper industry in order to provide a better background for focused research activities in the field as well as to facilitate investment decisions.
