Throughout the European Union, rural areas are undergoing dramatic changes which go hand-in-hand with profound institutional innovations. The ambition of the authors of this book is to provide practitioners and social scientists with theoretical tools which can be useful in analysing and coping with those transformations. The book explores several issues. What is rural? What light can economics shed on institutions and institutional changes? How to conceptualise the policy-making process? These questions have been thoroughly investigated in a working group on theoretical issues set up within the framework of COST Action A12 on rural innovations, institutions and rural change.
