The goals of the COST Action 846 “Measuring and Monitoring Farm Animal Welfare” were formulated to address public concern about farm animal welfare. Consequently, our effort focused on reviewing existing methods of evaluating welfare, identifying new ones, and communicating the results in an understandable fashion. Since the start of the Action, (effectively with the first meeting of the Management Committee on January 23, 2001), other studies have also stressed that European Citizens are becoming increasingly concerned about the way in which animals are treated in the production of animal-based food.

Neighbour noise is a significant problem having had insufficient attention for decades, both for existing housing and new housing. Time had come to solve the challenges by establishing a common framework in building acoustics throughout Europe. As a consequence, the research network, COST Action TU0901 “Integrating and Harmonizing Sound Insulation Aspects in Sustainable Urban Housing Constructions” was established to initiate and support a process towards such framework.

COST TU0901 considered the main tool to be an acoustic classification scheme for dwellings –implying definition of a number of quality classes– combined with knowledge about housing constructions complying with the class criteria.

This book is one of the main outcomes of COST Action A27 ‘Understanding pre-industrial structures in rural and mining landscapes’ (LANDMARKS). The contributions collected reflect a series of presentatinos and discussion stimulated by Per Grau Moller and Graham Fairclough. They show, through the eyes and experiences of researches, the main challenges and obstacles of Landscape Heritage in 13 European countries.
This document stresses the need to broach the study of landscapes from a multidisciplinary approach, paying attention to the historical processes and working on various scales. These are the challenges that this book intends to face and overcome.
